Minimally invasive foot surgery

Minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive foot surgery refers to a type of surgical procedure performed with a very small incision that requires minimal suturing. Through these extremely small incisions, specially designed instruments are inserted to carry out the operation. The limited skin exposure and low invasiveness at the local tissue level allow for a quicker and more manageable recovery after the procedure. Minimally invasive surgery was first introduced by Dr. Morton Polokoff in 1945, developing these techniques as a sub-dermal surgery system using very small tools. In the decades that followed, further surgical advancements led to the cutting-edge procedures we perform today, making minimally invasive surgery much safer and more comfortable for patients.

Advantage of minimally invasive surgery

Fewer complications

With minimally invasive surgery, there are fewer soft tissue injuries. Compared to traditional open surgery where long incisions are made that can create more trauma to soft tissues, minimally invasive surgery uses much smaller incisions that disturb less tissue and lead to faster recovery times.

Less pain

Studies have shown that patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery report less pain compared to those undergoing traditional surgery. Consequently, patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery require less use of pain relievers.

Shorter procedure times

Since there is a small incision, surgical times for minimally invasive foot surgery procedures are often shorter than traditional open surgeries.

Less anaesthesia

Patients remain awake during the surgery after selective anaesthesia, reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Only the leg is numb. This opens up the possibilities for surgery for patients who may have been previously considered at risk for traditional surgeries due to other clinical conditions.

Fewer scars

Following smaller incisions of minimally invasive foot surgeries, the scars left by these procedures are smaller and less noticeable.
